From random access memory (RAM) to operating systems (OS), there are many specifications to consider when purchasing a computer. Perhaps the most important, however, is the type of hard drive your new device will utilize. For the past several decades, most computers have used hard disk drives (HDD). But today, newer technology known as the solid state drive (SSD) is beginning to replace traditional hard drives.
So, which option should you choose for your next computer? Let’s take a closer look at the difference between these two types of hard drives and how an SSD might prove more advantageous.
Pros and Cons of Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)
As previously mentioned, HDDs were the standard drive for desktop and laptop computers in the past. This remains true for many desktop computers today. A major advantage of HDDs is that they tend to offer far more memory than SSDs. This is because solid state storage is slightly more expensive, thus you will pay a bit more for the same amount of memory. Additionally, HDDs often come at a slightly lower price point so it nay look like you are getting more memory for your buck.
While HDDs offer more space, they do have several disadvantages. First, hard disk drives have moving parts, which make a mild amount of noise as they work. However, it shouldn’t be exceptionally loud – unless there is an existing issue with your system. And because the parts within an HDD are mobile, they will eventually wear out from long-term use.
HDDs are also much slower than solid state drives, as they use magnetism to read and write information. Essentially, when you use a command to open a file from your hard disk drive, the system’s basic mechanism starts spinning to retrieve the data. This process is fairly quick, though certainly not instantaneous. Additionally, because the system uses magnetism to read and write files, your information could be wiped out if your computer comes in contact with a strong magnet. While this situation is fairly uncommon, it’s something that HDD users must be aware of.
Solid State Drive (SSD) Pros and Cons
SSD drives are newer and significantly more efficient in many ways. First, SSDs are more powerful and retrieve information in far less time than the traditional HDD. This means that an SSD is an excellent alternative for the default drive on your computer because it can launch and run large programs more easily.
Unlike hard disk drives, the parts within an SSD are unable to move. Because of this, solid state drives are a considerably faster, quieter, and more reliable option. Plus, when you choose a computer with an SSD, you might also enjoy lower energy bills. This is also due to the lack of moving parts within the drive.
The slightly higher price point of SDDs is why many people are hesitant to upgrade their computer to an SSD. As mentioned before, solid state storage is a tad more expensive than hard disk storage. Therefore, many devices that utilize SSDs lack adequate memory for files. To combat this, we recommend using an SSD for your main drive and that you add an external HDD to accommodate larger files that you don’t need immediate access to. This could include photos, documents, and videos. You should also move or delete any programs that you don’t need, as they can bog down your computer (regardless of the type of drive you’re using).
SSDs vs. HDDs – The Bottom Line
Overall, SSDs offer more benefits than standard HDDs. From higher speeds to more optimized performance, these drives are better suited to keep up with the demands of today’s digital environment. While they are typically slightly more expensive than hard disk drives, their improved functionality and durability make them a worthy investment.
However, if your computer currently uses a hard disk drive, and you aren’t quite ready to make the switch, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways to increase RAM on your PC, Mac, or laptop and enhance its speed and performance. And luckily, the team at } is more than happy to assist you.
