Windows 10 (Microsoft’s most recent operating system) debuted in July of 2015. Microsoft allowed users to upgrade to Windows 10 for free from the date of its release through the end of 2016. Three years have passed since then, and if you’re still running an older version of Windows, you may think you’ve missed your chance to get the free upgrade. However, it is still possible to update your computer software without having to buy Windows 10. Let’s take a look at how to do so.
Can I Update My PC to Windows 10 for Free?
If you have an older computer, you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free – as long as you’re upgrading from a PC with a legitimate license for the previous version of the software. Microsoft never discontinued the tools to upgrade and the licensing is still valid.
Many users were hesitant to upgrade when Windows 10 was first released because they weren’t sure how well it would work. Additionally, a lot of people simply didn’t want to learn how to use the new software. However, Windows 10 was designed to be as user-friendly as possible, and most current users prefer it to outdated versions.
If you have a laptop or computer sitting in a closet that you’d like to start using again, there’s no need to buy the new software to get it up to speed. You can upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 without paying for new licensing.
How Do I Update My PC to the Latest Version of Windows?
Some of this might sound a bit technical. If you’re not a very tech–savvy person or would simply like to minimize the hassle of setting up Windows 10 on your computer, NerdsToGo can help! Our experienced Nerds can come to your location and upgrade your software for you. And if you need a quick tutorial, they’ll also explain everything you need to know about using the device once Windows 10 is installed.
To upgrade the system on your own, visit the Download Windows 10 page on Microsoft’s website. Download the file and run the Media Creation Tool. From there, you can follow the on-screen prompts.
In most cases – and much to everyone’s surprise – you will probably not be asked for a product key. Once the update is completed, you will receive a digital license that you can confirm in your computer’s settings.
We should probably note here that a small number of Windows 7 systems have encountered a “setup failed” window after upgrading. When this happens, the prompts will ask for a product key. However, this problem also occurred during the initial upgrading time frame, when all updates were promoted as free. Therefore, it has nothing to do with completing the upgrade outside of Microsoft’s official window. This issue can be fixed by creating a bootable USB using the Notepad application.
If you’re well-versed in technology and have plenty of time to spend cleaning out your old computer and completing the set-up process, then this upgrade can be done on your own. However, it is moderately more technical than most of your everyday computing processes, so it’s best to seek help from an expert if you’re uncertain.
